We Need Better Sleep

A while ago, I read a blog post titled “Yoga Doesn’t Take Time; It Makes Time.” At the conclusion of my read, I remember thinking that it sounded like it made sense, but in literal terms, to do an hour’s worth of yoga meant that an hour was taken away from my work day.

So how could yoga ‘make time?’

Flash forward to yesterday. I was completely exhausted but I had a ton of work to do, and although I don’t ever nap (it’s been years), I fell asleep for about 90 minutes.

The result was this: instead of being tired and dragging my feet until bedtime, barely getting anything done due to my exhaustion, I woke up around 5 pm and did everything I wanted to do. I had renewed energy for every task I charged myself with, and it was because I let my body rest and restore.

So lately, there has been a huge movement towards publicizing the absolute need for better sleep. Pioneered greatly by Arianna Huffington, this cry for better sleep is becoming more and more relevant as we, as a society, try to take on way too much. (Her book is called The Sleep Revolution; I currently have it ordered from Amazon.)

Her theory is that sleep deprivation “has profound consequences – on our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness.”[1] Arianna writes “Only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives.”[2]

I, for one, am fascinated. We insist that our children slow down before bed and get enough sleep to sustain them throughout the day. But what about us? Why don’t we place the same importance on rest, restore, and repair for ourselves as we do for our children? We forget that sleep is a necessity. Not unlike shelter, food, and water, proper sleep is not a luxury; it’s a basic need.

How to Get Better Sleep

So tonight, try to prioritize sleep. Some ways to help you get a better sleep include:

  • Read a book for an hour before bed; don’t replace that time with the TV and internet
  • Meditate
  • Take a bath with calming essential oil
  • Keep your bedroom clean, dark, and cool
  • Don’t eat or drink a lot in the hours leading up to bedtime
  • Practice conscious breathing
  • Try light yoga, but not vigorous exercise
  • Don’t consume anything alcoholic within 2-3 hours before bed, or caffeinated within 10 hours before bed (try herbal tea)

Are You a Dirty Vegan?

As Canadians and Americans increasingly make the move towards veganism, some are doing it right, and others are…not. It seems pretty straight-forward, right? Vegan equals no animal products. But just because you aren’t consuming animal products, doesn’t mean you’re making healthy choices that are synonymous with veganism.

Three Major Reasons People are Taking the Plunge

Health

One reason people decide to cut animal products from their diet, is to reap the health rewards that come with eating mindfully. Those who view their bodies as temples and are reluctant to consume foods that harm rather than help, are more likely to give veganism a try. By cutting down on animal products, you automatically shave many processed foods (deli meat, hotdogs, pepperoni sticks, beef jerky), trans-fats, hormones, and unnecessary antibiotics from your diet.

Sustainability

Another reason to go vegan, is to stop contributing to unsustainable farming practices and the inevitable catastrophic results that occur from mass factory farming. The stats on land decimation caused by concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) is devastating, and the water used to hydrate food animals directly takes away from water that could be saving the lives of thirsty human beings.

The system doesn’t work, and more and more consumers are recognizing that.

Ethics

The third reason people explore veganism, is an ethical one. Why kill animals if we don’t have to? Sure, in some parts of the world, animal products are mainstays and necessary to the survival of that area’s inhabitants, but not in most of North America. (There are some northern regions, where the people living there rely on animal blubber and meat to survive.) Unnecessary suffering seems…unnecessary.

Since more people than ever before are becoming open to veganism, it’s interesting to take a look at their eating practices. Despite point number one above (health), many vegans are unhealthy people, and there are a variety of factors that contribute to one becoming a ‘dirty’ vegan.

Three Signs that You’re a Dirty Vegan

You consume A LOT of sugar.  As in, waaaaaayy too much. A bowl of saltwater taffy is definitely vegan (I think…), but it has zero nutrition. If you have a sugar addiction, don’t hide behind your new-found veganism—kick it to the curb with a fruit replacement, or, if you drink soda, convert to sparkling water.

You rely on processed foods. Again, a box of Oreos is vegan—this one I know for sure. But nutrition-wise? Another zero. Homemade granola or even grainy crackers are a better alternative. You have to be careful to not fall into the “it’s vegan—I’m good” trap. Just because it doesn’t contain animal products, doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Don’t assume a processed veggie dog has the same quality protein as a cup of chickpeas. It doesn’t.

You’re unaware of your nutrient intake. Many may feel that a stellar diet might consist of consuming only apples and carrots, but that’s incorrect. Remember that we, as human beings, require carbohydrates (brown rice, quinoa, millet, and other whole grains, fruits, seeds), protein (beans, tofu, nuts, seeds), and fat (avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts). Consciously consuming a great variety of the above foods as well as a plethora of vegetables and water is what makes your body happy and healthy, and that’s the main purpose of anyone’s intent when going vegan—to make the environment, animals, and ourselves happier and healthier.

So don’t be a dirty vegan. Remind yourself what your initial motivation was, why it’s important to you, what other amazing reasons there are for going vegan, and what your ultimate goal is.

Being dirty can be fun, but not at the expense of your health.

The Wellness Show is a weekend-long celebration of health and wellness, hosted each year in Vancouver. This year’s dates are the 13th-15th, and I’ll be there as a blogger on behalf on My Van City on the Sunday.

Some are surprising (I thought sprouting was in a couple of years ago),  but most are not (being more zen is definitely on trend). 😉 The rest of this post was written and passed along for The Happy Healthy Life to share by The Wellness Show, so without further adieu:

Here are the top trends we’re currently seeing in health and wellness:

1- Sprouting: Sprouting raw nuts, seeds, beans and grains is one of the quickest, easiest ways to pack a group of   nutrients into your body in just one handful. 7- Stealthy Healthy: A fantastic new trend in eating out is healthy upscale restaurants. You no longer have to resort to ordering a salad when eating out if you want to be healthy. Restaurants are now dedicated to creating healthy food that looks and tastes amazing. Attend cooking demos by the chefs from Graze, Calabash, Tojos, and Top Chefs to learn new, healthy recipes and techniques.

8- Wearable tech: One of the biggest fitness trends is wearable tech that monitors your daily steps, how much you sleep, how much you eat, and how many calories you burn on your workout. Your tech is linked to your home computer or your smartphone. Another trend is apps‹your smartphone can now source your healthy lunch, prompt you to drink water, or help you to workout.

9- Connecting with your inner Zen: We need calm and peace more than ever in today’s busy world with never-ending emails and Facebook updates. 10- New fun workouts:  Instead of hour-long workouts, the trend is to shorter, 20 or 30 minute, high-intensity workouts. Outdoor workouts are another great trend happening right now being outdoors has wonderful benefits to add to exercise. Wellness Tea Recipe for Cold and Flu Season

It’s December, and that means we’re smack in the middle of a season known for fevers, runny noses, ear aches, and nausea. These annoying and sometimes awful ailments are easily spread because everyone huddles together inside, and there is less air circulation. Cold weather also can lower the immune system, making us more susceptible to bugs, and the increased consumption of holiday spirits definitely don’t help.

I started making a tea with only four ingredients to assist in immune function and lessen cold symptoms and duration. I’m calling it Yellow Wellness Tea, mostly because it’s fun to challenge my kids to say the name three times, fast.

(Spoiler alert: one out of three can do it.)

The ingredients to make this tea can all be found in a regular grocery store (usually), and if not, any decent health food store should definitely carry them.

Wellness Tea Spices

Here are the four items I use, and why they make an amazing preventative/symptom-reducing drink:

Turmeric

  • Tames heartburn and an upset stomach
  • Helps lessen joint pain
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Relieves pain

Ginger

  • Relieves nausea
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Contains anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-parasitic properties
  • Reduces vertigo
  • Helps with digestive upset

Lemongrass

  • Relieves pain
  • Helps with nausea
  • Calms a cough
  • Soothes muscles and joints
  • Prevents bacterial growth
  • Reduces fever
  • Loosens chest congestion

Lemon

  • Anti-bacterial and anti-viral
  • Relieves indigestion and constipation
  • Fever-reducing
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Relieves respiratory disorders and throat infections

So you can see how combining all of these incredibly helpful things together creates a concoction for wellness and health improvement, right?!

Herbal Tea

Recipe for one 16 ounce (I don’t fool around) cup of Yellow Wellness Tea:

Ingredients

¼ tsp. ground turmeric

Small thumb of ginger, peeled and minced finely

1 tbsp. dried lemongrass leaves, crushed

½ of a lemon, juice and zest

(1 tsp. honey *optional)

Method

Combine all ingredients and mix together well. Place in tea infuser, and set in large glass or mug. Fill that sucker with boiled water, and let steep for 3-5 minutes, depending how strong you like it. (I recommend starting with 3 minutes.) If you feel it’s too strong, simply add more water to dilute. Add honey if you need some sweetness. Drink hot, and go to bed early.

Nutritional Benefits of #Kale You May Not Know

Morning, folks! (Or good afternoon if you’re on the east coast…?) I’ve come across an excellent article on kale, and since it’s still a topic that seems to be going strong (kale’s had a good run), I’ve decided to post the related infographic, which is being shared with us by Health Ambition.
Kale is one of those incredible leafy greens that has so many health benefits (I use it weekly, in conjunction with other anti-IBS foods), that it’s beyond worth incorporating into your weekly diet. In the original article, written by Akil Wingate, it states that “One cup of kale is only 36 calories and 0 grams of fat. It also provides 20% of the RDA of dietary fiber which in all its digestive glory promotes regular digestion, prevents constipation and lowers blood sugar levels. The glucosinolates also prevent the bacteria H. pylori from forming on the stomach lining and leading to gastric cancer.​”

Local Food Products that are Rocking My World

Save-On-foods Vendors

This past weekend, I took part in an event at Save-On-Foods that was promoting local products. I signed Happy Healthy Gut books, and the other vendors were Happy Water, NutraCleanse, and Everyday Superfoods.

It is SO much fun to hang out with people who are like-minded when it comes to health. While the Happy Water reps kept the rest of us hydrated and genuinely happy (they literally danced and hoola-hooped the WHOLE time while playing Top 40), I was fortunate enough to chat for an extended period of time with Tony from NutraCleanse and Gordon from Everyday Superfoods about their products. I decided that this week’s blog should inform consumers of these fairly brand-new products, and perhaps you’ll all fall in love with them as I did.

Happy Water

Happy Water: This product is an award-winning, naturally alkaline lithia water. The water originates from Canada (Kootenay region), and is produced in Vancouver, BC. It contains “naturally occurring lithia, calcium, magnesium, potassium and fluoride.”[1]

Nutricleanse

NutraCleanse:  Although I’ve seen this natural health product around for awhile, I’d never before tried it, which is VERY unlike me. I’m a sucker for new health products (especially foodstuffs), and I’m surprised at myself.

This product is manufactured in Mission, BC, and the ingredients are organic, gluten-free, and limited to ground flax seed, psyllium husks, dandelion root powder, burdock root powder, and fenugreek seed powder.

That’s it.

The purpose behind adding this product to your daily smoothie or yogurt or whatever is to increase your overall fibre—and it sure works! If you’re someone who feels as though you could benefit from increased fibre consumption (ahem—EVERYONE), then you should give this product a try. I am a huge promoter of gut health, and this particular product is a goodie!

A 1 Kg. bag goes for roughly $29.99, but you can get it for $20.99 if you keep your eyes peeled.

Everyday Superfoods

Everyday Superfoods: Again, I’ve seen this product around (the rep told me it’s been around for a couple of years, but they only recently have become very mainstream and distributed), but hadn’t tried it yet. The main ingredients in their mixes are chia seeds, hemp hearts, and buckwheat.

The blends are great on oatmeal, in yogurt, or added to baking, and there are at least four different mixtures. The one I’m trying right now is called Cocoa Wow, and I also took home a bag called Trim.

They go for about $6.99 per bag (the weight isn’t disclosed, but it looks like it’s just over a cup’s worth), and the product is mostly organic, gluten-free, and vegan. It’s manufactured in Richmond, BC.

5 Signs of Good Health: what “healthy” truly looks like

The definition of “healthy” is different for many of us. Some people believe health is what is attained once you’ve cut out carbs, and others feel that they’re healthy if they’re abstaining from processed sugar. But health is a broad term. Are you healthy if you aren’t currently diagnosed with a chronic disease? Does veganism equal health?

What exactly does is mean to be truly healthy?

The following points are what I’ve come up with, both during my own observations and experiences, as well as asking others this question. Here are what I consider to be five signs that you are really healthy:

  1. You consistently get 7-8 hours of sleep every night, and wake up feeling refreshed. Great, consistent sleep is a fabulous indicator of good health. It means your body is regulated, your cortisol levels and core body temperature are normal, and you have the ability to let your mind rest peacefully, which indicates low stress. If you can achieve amazing sleep, congratulations! If you fall into the category of those who can’t sleep, I can assure you, I’ve definitely been there. For me, there are 3 things that I’ve identified as being culprits here: alcohol consumption (if I have more than one glass of wine, sleep is up in the air), stress (overthinking things), and excitement (not calming down enough for your body to rest). Other things that can lead to bad sleep include eating right before bed (your body will buzz with the energy t takes to digest that snack), sleeping in a warm room, and too much light.
  2. You have energy throughout the entire day. No 3pm slump for you! How does one obtain this? Aside from having a decent sleep, it’s with food. Good food. Food that contains proper energy sources and the correct balance of nutrients to assist your body in lasting happily throughout the entire day. Real food—not a chocolate bar. A good tip: eat a light, healthy lunch (lettuce wraps or salad with wild salmon), and then grab a snack around 3 o’clock. A smoothie, homemade granola bar, or boiled egg with salsa and avocado are great examples.
  3. You’re moving your bowels in a healthy way at least once a day. Now, when I specify “healthy” here, I mean that your movements are effortless, quick, significant, and normal-looking. (Not loose.) If you’re feeling empty after visiting the washroom, that’s good. To achieve better bowel movements, try tracking how much insoluble fibre you ingest (you need this to sweep your colon clean), and make sure you’re drinking enough water. Foods that can make BMs subpar are dairy, too much heavy meat, heavy breads (especially if you’re sensitive to wheat or gluten), and too much sugar.   4. Your skin is clear, and your hair and nails look good. Your skin is your largest organ, and what it looks like says a lot about your health. Same goes for your hair and nails. Dry, brittle nails and hair can signify dehydration, and peeling problems can represent vitamin deficiencies. For better skin, hair, and nails, try drinking more water and eating more vegetables. Cut down on processed sugar, and begin to look at your food as fuel for your body.
  5. You’re happy. Honestly, consistently, truly happy. Happiness is directly correlated with good health, and people who can honestly call themselves happy are typically healthy, too. The mind and body are completely connected, and a clear, calm mind will usually be accompanied by a healthy body. To achieve better happiness, try and make a list of everything that is in your life that makes you upset and stressed out. Either let it go (meaning get out of that unhappy relationship or find a better job), or make clear strides to improve the situation. Do it NOW—don’t wait.

What I am trying to get at it this: you don’t have to weigh 120 pounds or love the Paleo diet or declare veganism as your new diet of choice to be healthy. Health is a complicated thing, but the points above will hopefully lead you in the right direction.

 

Health, Business, and That Proverbial Wagon

The reason I’m writing this particular post is because for the last week or two (it’s two), I’ve been eating a lot of really awful food. And I don’t mean that I’m eating things like cake and hotdogs and bacon. I mean that I am eating too much, too frequently, consuming too little greens, and drinking too much wine. It’s all about the excess. Winter is a hard time for me to keep my diet in check (I blame low levels of Vitamin D and almost zero willpower), and after two weeks of slowly slipping on my usual semi-strict diet, I’m definitely feeling the effects.

Combine that with the fact that I just broke my coffee grinder a couple of days ago and have no coffee here, and I’m kind of a mess. (And by “mess” I mean I’m slowly but surely entering Bitch Town, population ME.) Both coffee and cheese have crack-like effects on me—or what I imagine those effects to feel like—and since I don’t eat a lot of cheese anymore, coffee’s my crutch.

With soy or coconut cream, of course.

This whole diet thing can also be relatable to anyone out there who feels like they’re slipping in regards to their business. I find diet and business to be seamlessly connected. When I’m truly healthy, I work better. I get better assignments. I complete those assignments faster, with more enthusiasm.

Period.

Soooo….how do I get back on track? It’s actually pretty simple. Only it involves a lot of willpower, and I’m feeling pretty lazy. (Probably a side-effect of my recent crappy diet.)

STEP 1: Accept what I’ve done, and move on. This goes for anybody trying to get back on track, whether it’s quitting smoking, cutting back on drinking, altering food, stepping up their business, whatever. It’s key to understand that we are all human, we make mistakes, and then then we need to motor off in the right direction. Leave the past behind.

STEP 2: Make a plan. In my case, I made today’s meal plan for myself yesterday. I was prepared. I made sure I had all the ingredients. If you’re quitting smoking, make sure you have no cigarettes around, and have plenty of sugar-free gum to keep your hands busy. Be ready to distract yourself. If it’s your business that you’ve been lazy about, make time to get stuff done. No excuses. There will always be excuses—but time flies by. Take advantage of the time you have now.

STEP 3: Stick to the plan. This is totally different than making the plan. Sticking to it requires that willpower that I was previously talking about. Sometimes it helps to write yourself notes to slap on the fridge. (Sometimes your kids or husband make fun of you for this, but who cares?) If you need them, then use them. It doesn’t matter what others think. You know yourself best—don’t listen to naysayers or pessimistic people. Again, in relation to your business, it is YOUR business. Nobody’s going to do the grunt work necessary for stepping it up better than you.

STEP 4: Make it a habit. The longer you can stick to your plan, the better your chances for success. Create a routine. Mark successful days on the calendar. Challenge yourself. Reward yourself. You can do it; anybody can. Be your own best YOU. Make your business the best model of its kind. You’re capable—don’t let others distract you. Habit is key.

STEP 5: Acknowledge your hard work. And if you slip a little, remind yourself of step one. If you feel like you’re facing challenges that are impossible or aren’t getting the results you think you deserve (I don’t know whether I’m talking about my diet or my business at this point, but it doesn’t matter—they’re similar), keep going. Don’t stop. That next deal could be in the next cold call. That two pounds could peel off with your next run.

Just. Keep. Going.

So, day one of desperately grasping for the back of that wagon is just beginning. As I’m typing this, I’m finishing my fresh-pressed vegetable juice, eyeing up the half bottle of wine on my counter (which I think I’ll be dumping—I know it’s a little sacrilege, but sometimes you have to get drastic), and thinking about what I’ll do throughout the day to keep myself on track. If you need to change something in YOUR life, whether it’s to get back on that proverbial wagon or begin a whole brand-new routine, know that it’s totally attainable.
