Unhealthy "Health" Foods

What is up with the crazy, enormous influx of unhealthy “health” foods? These drive me crazy! I understand that people may feel less guilty when purchasing and/or consuming them, but the fact of the matter is this: they’re NOT healthy!

My top 5 unhealthy “health” foods, in no particular order:

1- Low-Fat/Sugar Free. These products have been stripped of their naturally-containing fats and sugars, or the fats and sugars that have traditionally been added to them, and injected with chemicals to replace the tastelessness of products that need fat and/or sugar to taste good. (Whew! Long sentence…) These are NOT health products; these products have beem manufactured to fool you. They are high in “non-sugars” which could be anything from Equal to corn starch (*shudder*), and should not be consumed by anyone. Please, please, just buy full fat products and then limit your intake. Ditto for sugar. If you could buy a sugar-free apple, would you? No! That’s weird. So is sugar-free anything else.

2- Red Wine. Although red wine may contain antioxidants and other healthy components, it is still alcohol. It is high in calories and sugar, stains your teeth, contributes to bad decison making after a couple of glasses, nutritionally speaking. (5 cookies? Why not? I’m feeling GREAT!) It’s okay to have a glass of red wine here and there, but don’t think that it’s healthy, or that because it’s marketed as such, you can drink as much as you see fit. It’s junk-food. Delicious, delicious junk food.

3- Chocolate and Coffee. Chocolate is high in sugar, fat, and wreaks havoc with people who have lactose intolerant issues. Not only that, but most chocolate (along with coffee) originates from an area of the world that is known to use slave labour in order to produce this product. If you must eat chocolate and/or coffee, eat dark (80% cacao or higher), and literally one bite a day. Also, make sure it’s fair-trade, so you can consume it mindfully.

4- Dairy. Despite MUCH promotion from the National Dairy Council and similar organizations, dairy is high in fat, possesses growth hormones and antibiotics, aids and abets poor treatment of food animals, and contributes to major digestive unease in a high percentage of the world’s population. It does not save us from osteoporosis, but in fact contributes to it by creating an acidic environment within our bodies. Our bodies then leach calcium out of our bones to balance the acidic reaction, thus doing the exact opposite of what we have all been taught as tots. Dairy’s out.

5- (Factory-Farmed) Meat. Animals that have been raised in a factory-farm situation have been injected with and/or fed artificial growth hormones, an abundance of antibiotics, most have been treated cruelly, and a high percentage have been tested positive for E. coli, Campyobacter, Salmonella, and/or Listeria. Gross. Please, please, eat better meat products. To find out where you can purchase such meats, visit www.eatwild.com. It’s hard to believe that so many organizations and campaigns can convince us that these foods are healthy, when they’re not. But it’s all about moolah, right? Knowledge is power. Make your body happy, and consume better products. 😀

    Wow! Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing this! Not only did I learn a lot but you also confirmed some things for me. Like the no fat, no sugar thing. I love to bake and I had a feeling that no fat, no sugar was probably unhealthy. I’m always saying to friends that if they remove something, what is taking it’s place? I tell them I buy items with full fat, full sugar. At least then I know what I’m dealing with!
    You know what else though? The new barrage of “organic” food. I think that organic food is great. But I have this nagging suspicion that a bunch of the same product is mass produced by some companies and then some of it goes into regular packaging and some of it goes into packaging with the word “organic” stamped on it.

      Hi, Melinda! About the organics: if the package says “FDA certified” or “USDA certified”, it should be as organic as it can get. If the package advertises itself as organic (some say “80% organic ingredients”), then I wonder. 🙂 I’m a huge proponent of organic produce, as I live in a huge agricultural center of BC, and often see fields being mass-sprayed with chemicals. :/

      Your best bet is to just eat as clean as you can (within reason–don’t go crazy here!), and try and purchase items with only a few ingredients. Oh, and really be aware of any ingredient that is related to corn. (Corn starch, cory syrup, corn itself…unless it’s organic) Over 90% of our corn products are GMO, and I think GMOs are super shady. Happy Monday! (Or Tuesday, I suppose…lol)
